What it is

Cerebrolysin is a mixture of porcine-brain-derived peptides (approximately 15% peptides, 85% free amino acids) produced by standardised enzymatic digestion. Approved in several Eastern European and Asian jurisdictions.

Evidence snapshot

Category: Cognition. Status: Mixed. See the references section below for the underlying primary sources.

Mechanism

Proposed mechanisms include neurotrophic factor mimicry (BDNF, GDNF, CNTF-like activity), anti-inflammatory effects, and direct neuroprotective effects.

Key research findings

Clinical trials in stroke recovery, Alzheimer’s disease, and traumatic brain injury have produced mixed results. Some studies report improvements in functional outcomes.

Limits of the evidence

Approved in Russia, China, and some other countries; not approved by FDA or EMA. The complex mixture makes mechanism characterisation difficult.
